Swimming around Manhattan? Successful challenge for Paule Kremer, who on Saturday became the first Luxembourger to complete the “20 bridges swim” (the “swim of the twenty bridges”), a test which consists in circumventing the New York island by the three rivers which encircle, representing a total distance of almost 46 km. The Walferdangeoise accomplished this performance in 8 hours and 13 minutes.
The route begins in the famous Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan, from where Paule Kremer set off at 10:38 am to circumnavigate the island in an anti-clockwise direction.
A collection of donations for the Cancer Foundation
Paule first had to go up the East River, which separates Manhattan from Brooklyn and Queens, notably passing under the Brooklyn Bridge, the most famous of the twenty bridges that give the course its name. She then crossed the Harlem River, which separates Manhattan from the Bronx in the north of the city, to join the Hudson River which descends along the western flank of the Big Apple, and thus return to the starting point.
Paule Kremer, who achieved this performance with the support of her team, joins a list of around 300 swimmers who have completed this legendary course. Prior to the event, she had appealed for donations, entirely donated to the Cancer Foundation.
She had already become in 2017 the first Luxembourger to cross the Channel.
