FULL CHRONICLE
The second day of XXVII Winter Cantabrian Championship, held last Saturday in Santander, left two new regional titles for the Camargo Ría del Carmen showcases, which presented about 40 athletes in competition. And it is that Paula García Quijano and Isabel Valencia managed to win the 1,500 meters and high jump tests of the Autonomous Absolute. The competition, in which the Camargue club already accumulates four of the eight victories distributed in the female category, will close next Saturday, again in La Albericia, and with the dispute of the specialties of 60 and 800 meters, 60 hurdles, pole and triple jump.
The triumphs of Lucía Monte and Estela Rodríguez in the 400 and 3,000 meter races, achieved in the first stop of the competition, were joined on Saturday by Paula García Quijano in the 1,500-meter specialty, where she also carried her mark of the season until 4: 46.16, a time with which he seeks to qualify for the Spanish Under23 Indoor Championship, scheduled in Valencia on the weekend of February 13 and 14. With the 863 points per table added up in the event, the promising young cross-country athlete provisionally placed second in the Cantabrian Winter Championship, once eight events had been contested, just ahead of her partner Lucía Monte. The best male athlete in the ‘milqui’ test was the youth Jorge Sanz, who slipped into the top ten overall with a time of 4: 23.46.
From the hand of Isabel Valencia, who was already runner-up in the pentathlon, came the second regional title for the Camargo athletes, specifically in the high jump event. The junior athlete obtained a record of 1.47 meters with which she added a total of 706 points per table that also placed her in the provisional sixth position of the overall championship. In men, the sub16 Adrián Prieto obtained the regional runner-up. Marcos Santamarta also won silver in the length contest, making a good record of 6.37 meters. In the same category of women, Rosa Valencia was the best classified, in fourth place.
Among the first three Cantabrians also finished the U18 sprinter Ana Mazo, who stopped the clock at 26.35 in the 200-meter test. In the men’s category, the best classified was Diego Pérez, eighth in goal with 24.30 seconds. It should be noted that in most of the races held outdoors they were highly conditioned by the strong prevailing wind, against much of the competition, which had an impact on the value of the records achieved by the participating athletes.
In the pole and triple jump controls, Samuel Bustillo, third with a great record of 3.95 meters in men, and Lara Frehiwot Puente, who finished in fifth place in the women’s competition. Several control tests were also held for the cadet category athletes, especially the 300 runners, who signed an excellent triplet with Hana Fernández, Valeria Perona and Julia Arranz. The winner’s mark was 46.84.
The sub-16 athletes participating in 1,000 also stood out, with Víctor Sanz bordering on victory until the end with 2: 56.70, eventually signing second place, and also with Jesús Cotera and Javier Agüero, among other club highlights, keeping their personal records until 3: 05.25 and 3: 07.70 to dominate the second of the disputed series. Despite having this handicap, they managed to qualify in fifth and sixth place overall. To also review the performance of Luna García, third in the cadet weight contest with a best attempt of 8.60 meters.
