Paul Timrot explains the consequences of introducing a bicycle lane on Čaka Street

The construction of a temporary bicycle infrastructure has started in Rīga, Čaka Street. Not a single citizen opposes it. Paul Timrot looks at the potential consequences of the Zebra show if the bicycle lane on Čaka Street is left after the end of the experiment.

The story “Zebra” looks at what is really going on in Čaka Street in the future, how serious it is and several possible scenarios that could lead to the creation of a bicycle lane on this street.

Paul Timrot explains why such an initiative is ill-considered in a conversation with former International Automobile Federation (FIA) commissioner Reini Poznak in the “Big Bang Theory” program.

It has already been reported that the Riga City Council Traffic and Transport Affairs Committees supported the creation of temporary experimental cycle lanes Chaka and Marijas streets. When installing them, it is planned to allocate one lane for road transport in each direction. Critics point out that bike lanes will increase congestion and slow down public transport. That is why the public initiative portal Manabals has been launched collecting signatures against the narrowing of Aleksandra Čaka Street in the bicycle lane installation.
