Paul Montgomery: I watched Didier Drogba even before he joined Chelsea

Before moving to Chelsea, Didier Drogba was spotted by another Premier League club.

Drogba joined Chelsea from Marseille in 2004 for £24 million.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, he scored 104 goals in 254 league matches.

The Ivorian has also won 14 trophies, including the Champions League and four league titles. He was also the Premier League’s top scorer twice.

However, according to former scout Paul Montgomery, he could play for another London club.

In an exclusive interview with Sean Custis and Henry Winter on Sunday, he revealed that he watched Drogba at West Ham when he played for French side Guingamp.

Montgomery also watched future Chelsea player Florent Malouda.

Asked how he met Drogba, he explained: “I went to look at Malouda and then I saw Drogba on the bench.”

“When I walked onto the field for 20 minutes in the first game, I thought, ‘Wow!’ – and then returned to looking through my files.”

“I had already seen him once at Le Mans and noted that he was something to keep an eye on.”

Montgomery was even able to convince Drogba to join the Hammers, but they were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2002/03 season.

As a result, Drogba moved to Marseille for just £5 million, before moving to Chelsea a year later.

Didier Drogba’s trophies with Chelsea:

Premier League – 4

Champions League – 1

FA Cup – 4

League Cup – 3

Community Shield – 1

The Hammers also missed out on Malouda, who moved to Lyon in 2007 and then Chelsea.
