Paul Mescal Opens Up About Nervousness and Anxiety on Set with Pedro Pascal and the Stress of the Highly-Anticipated ‘Gladiator’ Sequel

‘Gladiator’ sequel performer Paul Mescal has opened up about the nervousness and anxiety during his first encounter with high-profile on-set colleague Pedro Pascal and explained why the highly-anticipated film is causing him “stress”.

what is known

In a recent interview with Esquire ahead of the SAG-AFTRA strike, the actor revealed he saw the ‘The Last of Us’ star at the Los Angeles airport just before announcing his involvement in the film, but was “too scared to talk to him.” Mescal said that Pascal ended up addressing him himself and “just seemed so real; I’m really looking forward to being with him.”

In the film, Mescal stars as the adult Lucius, originally portrayed as the young nephew of Commodus, the Roman Emperor, played by Joaquin Phoenix in the 2000 film. The ‘Normal People’ star explained to The Hollywood Reporterthat he didn’t have to audition for the role. He simply met with acclaimed director Ridley Scott, who discussed the parameters of the story with him. And then Mescal was just given the script.

However, production is now on hold due to the ongoing double strikes. But director Ridley Scott managed to get about halfway through filming the sequel, which began in June, before they had to halt the process.

Mescal wasn’t able to reveal many details about the ‘Gladiator’ sequel because he was afraid to say something he shouldn’t.

“I can’t tell you how stressed I am talking about this film because it’s definitely the greatest film I’ve ever made. I’m really excited, but it’s difficult to break away from the film’s legacy I think it’s really well written and an homage to the first film, but it’s something I can relate to and comfortably make my own.”

The actor also admitted he has yet to speak to original ‘Gladiator’ star Russell Crowe.

“I don’t know what we would be talking about. I’d love to hear his stories from filming, but the character is something completely different,” he explained.

when to wait

The Gladiator sequel, which also stars Connie Nielsen, Denzel Washington and Joseph Quinn, is expected to hit theaters on November 24, 2024.
