Paul McCartney has his beloved bass guitar back after more than fifty years. The instrument was stolen in 1972, eleven years after the Beatles singer and composer bought it for £30. The bass guitar can be heard on several hits by the British band and has an estimated value of 11 million euros.
Höfner, the German company that made the bass guitar, began a search for the instrument in 2018 after McCartney said he missed his old bass guitar so much. Investigators learned that the guitar had been stolen from an equipment van and sold a few days later, for a few beers, to the owner of a pub in the English seaside town of Hastings.
Höfner investigators tracked down the 21-year-old grandson of the pub owner. The guitar was in his attic room, he had inherited it from his grandfather. He had no idea it was such a special instrument. According to the British tabloid The Sun, McCartney is in discussions with the student about a possible reward.
Höfner confirmed that the instrument was really McCartney’s first bass guitar. “The paintwork is impossible to imitate. And the guitar looks as if it has been stored somewhere for fifty years,” the company explains.
The bass guitar accompanied the singer on songs like Love Me Do, She Loves You in Twist and Shout. McCartney says on his website that he is “extremely grateful” to have the guitar back.
