Paul McCartney’s original bass guitar, which the legendary musician used in The Beatles’ early years, has been found and returned after being stolen more than five decades ago.
The 81-year-old singer-songwriter was recently reunited with the left-handed Höfner 500/1 Violin Bass, thanks to the efforts of the instrument’s manufacturer and a husband-and-wife team of journalists. Their search, which began in 2018 and later developed into a crowdsourcing campaign called The Lost Bass Project, successfully resulted in the guitar’s recovery.
The guitar’s return was confirmed in a statement released by McCartney’s website, which expressed his gratitude to all those involved in reuniting him with the instrument.
The Lost Bass Project: Efforts to Find McCartney’s Stolen Guitar
The Lost Bass Project, initially launched in 2018, aimed to locate and recover McCartney’s stolen bass guitar. Although the investigation initially stalled, it gained traction when journalists Scott Jones and his wife Naomi, partnered with Höfner’s executive Nick Wass, to generate more media attention and leverage the public’s assistance.
The campaign’s relaunch in fall 2022 resulted in an influx of leads, with over 600 emails sent to The Lost Bass Project within 48 hours. These invaluable tips gradually led to the discovery of McCartney’s stolen guitar.
The Unraveling of the Mystery
The key breakthrough in the search came when sound engineer Ian Horne, who had worked with McCartney’s band Wings, reached out to The Lost Bass Project. Horne revealed that the bass guitar had been stolen from the back of his van in London’s Notting Hill neighborhood back in 1972.
Following Horne’s tip, further investigation determined that the stolen bass had been sold to Ron Guest, the landlord of the Admiral Blake pub, for a few pounds and some beers. From there, the instrument passed through his family, ultimately coming into possession of his son, Haydn Guest, and his wife, Cathy Guest.
A Reunion Long Overdue
After Cathy Guest stumbled upon information about the search for the lost bass, she realized that the instrument stored in her attic closely matched McCartney’s missing guitar. Cathy contacted McCartney’s studio, and in December, the bass was finally returned to its rightful owner.
Following its return, experts authenticated the instrument approximately two months later.
