If you’ve been Paul McCartney’s bass guitar, you’ve been in for a lot of fun. The Beatles legend bought the Höfner bass at the Steinway Musikhaus in Hamburg in 1961, and then paid around NOK 400 for it, according to BBC.
It was quite a lot then, but it’s not the cost that has bothered McCartney, it’s the emotional value. And it was certainly a blast to play too, the four-stringer that was featured on classics such as “Love me do” and “She loves you”.
Felt cooler
After having the guitar in the bass portfolio for eight years, it disappeared in 1969. Nick Wass previously worked for 12 years for Höfner and has now started a global hunt for the bass together with two journalists.
It wasn’t just the sound McCartney liked. He also felt cooler with it.
– I am left-handed, and this one was symmetrical. Then I looked less stupid. I immediately fell in love with it, says Macca The Guardian.

Wass says that he recently spoke to McCartney about the bass, and that it was then that the idea of the worldwide hunt was born.
The digging journalists will “investigate” and then Wass will check the authenticity if they get tips or come across potential candidates. There have been many rumors over the years, but it has still disappeared without a trace.
– Someone knows something
– Although no one knows what actually happened, it is likely that it was stolen. But somewhere out there, someone knows, says Wass, who has created the website The Lost Bass.
Wass has also written a deeper analysis of the Höfner 500/1 Violin Bass for Guitar World.
Paul McCartney got on in life, and made some hits later in his career, to put it mildly.
– I’ve owned a Höfner since I started, but the old one is still my favourite, McCartney has said.
The Beatles disbanded in 1970, i.e. not long after the bass disappeared – without the breakup having anything to do with it.
For almost a decade, the English enchanted the world with their music, which was produced at an intensively high tempo.
