VfB Stuttgart still has to wait. The Swabians fought bravely on Sunday night, but lost 1-0 to Union Berlin and are still waiting for their first win of the season. In the end it was a corner that made the difference.

It was a scene that made a difference. A standard situation in which the VfB were not in the game and therefore in the end lost the game: the last quarter of an hour had already begun when Gießelmann hit a corner in front of Stuttgart’s goal. Jaeckel ran in, climbed and directed the ball into the far corner with his forehead – 0: 1, the deciding goal in a close and close match in which the VfB had fought well. In the end, however, the Swabians were once again empty-handed and slipped out of the field disappointed.
After Wolfsburg’s 2: 3, coach Pellegrino Matarazzo has called up two new players in his starting XI. Zagadou and Tiago Tomas started for Stenzel and Führich.
Union coach Urs Fischer made three changes from his 1-0 win in Malmö: instead of Diogo Leite, Trimmel and Haberer, Jaeckel, Gießelmann and Haraguchi were in the starting XI. When the ball rolled, the Berliners couldn’t hide the fact that Stuttgart’s 90 minutes were already their third away match in a week.
Zagadou fails on the post
VfB was the best team in the first half. The hosts not only had more possession and won most of the duels – the team from Matarazzo also created good chances, but did not catch them. After 15 minutes, Union had to take a deep breath for the first time when Zagadou aimed the ball in the direction of the goal after an Ito free kick with the arm and hit the post (15th). Subsequently it is Guirassy who closes on a cross from Tiago Tomas, but with his forehead he puts the ball a few centimeters from the Berlin goal (35 ‘).
The Union has just appeared on the offensive. There was once a lack of accuracy in a promising situation when Becker Schäfer was looking for a cross pass (18th), then Jaeckel and Gießelmann came to the finish (45th + 1 each) – but VfB was the most aggressive and dangerous team in the referee Bastian Dankert sent the two teams to the booths at half-time.
After the change of sides, the Union became a little more active, but for a long time it had no influence. When Jaeckel then scored, Stuttgart had to throw everything forward in the final minutes. Luck, however, is not on the side of the VfB: Mavropanos hits the post (79 ‘).
Guirassy expelled
Shortly after Guirassy saw the Giallorossi after a foul on Thorsby (83 °), a few minutes later it was clear that Stuttgart would remain winless in the ninth Bundesliga game.
The already very important home match of the Swabians, scheduled for Saturday (15:30) next week against VfL Bochum, has acquired even more importance. Union are back on the pitch on Thursday (21:00) in the Europa League against Malmö, and over the weekend the Berliners will meet Borussia Dortmund.
