Paul Auster’s wife, Siri Hustvedt, has announced that the writer is suffering from cancer. “I’ve been away from Instagram for a while. The reason is that my husband was diagnosed with cancer in December, after being ill for several months,” wrote the writer and essayist in a lengthy post explaining that Auster is being treated at Sloan Kettering in New York.
“I entered a land called Cancerland, which many of you have known”, continues the wife of the famous author. “Some people survive and others die. Everyone knows it, yet living that truth up close changes everyday reality. Intimacy with another person is not just a parallel experience, two lines moving in the same direction, but not intersect. It’s much more like a dynamic Venn diagram: the overlapping parts of two circles move and change over time. A moving “I” and “you” who are also “we,” Hustvedt wrote. who has been married to Auster since 1982.
For the family of the 76-year-old writer, this is yet another tragedy after the death of his son Daniel of an overdose, immediately after that of granddaughter Ruby. The 44-year-old was found dead in a Brooklyn subway station three days after being released on bail following his arrest on Easter Sunday for the death of his 10-month-old daughter. The writer’s son was accused of manslaughter because large quantities of drugs had been found in the child’s body.
