In July 2017, the second phase of restoration work on the Saint-Maximin church in Thionville required the removal for safety of two of the four monumental canvases adorning the interior of the religious building. “As their restoration was on the agenda, the other two paintings having been restored in 2013, the paintings were entrusted to the Jeannette de Boersch workshop, in Alsace, so that they could store them on site while waiting. to be able to take care of it ”, details Jonathan Henrion, building and worship manager for the Portes de France-Thionville area. Total cost of the operation: € 110,156 (HT). An addition shared between the agglomeration community (25%), the Drac (50%) and the Grand Est region (25%) and which is part of the overall restoration of the building.
From below, the size of the canvases impresses. Seven meters by three. On one, a Christ bathed in light represents his own resurrection, while on the other, Mary is surrounded by an assembly of saints. The colors are brilliant, the restaurateurs Noëlle Jeannette and Julien Champlon have done their work. “The canvases were very dirty, by soot and heating dust, it was also necessary to treat successive restorations, repainting on the canvases, their tears …”, lists Noëlle Jeannette. In order to be able to last in time, the two tables were also fixed on new frames. “They are made of wood and aluminum and will allow them to be tightened if necessary,” explains Julien Champlon.
