He first thought that he, like many others in the spring of 2021, had been affected by covid-19. But thanks to a friend – who acted as a dog guard and thus could see how Sjöberg was getting worse – Sjöberg finally made it to the hospital.
It soon became clear that he had suffered from bilateral pneumonia and a serious form of blood poisoning.
– Six more hours at home and I would have disappeared. It was a bit dizzying to hear afterwards, he says in SVT’s Min sanning.
Later during the hospital stay, the situation would be critical. In the program, Sjöberg says that his daughter, despite the pandemic and clear restrictions on patient visits, was asked to go inside.
It could be the last chance to say goodbye.
“Not afraid to die anymore”
– All of a sudden my daughter was standing next to my bed in the intensive care unit. Then I had been sedated for so long. Strange things happen inside the head, so I didn’t really connect why she was there, I only understood that after a couple of days, says Sjöberg in the program.
Eventually, Patrik Sjöberg recovered and was able to be discharged from hospital – albeit with a complication that required a second operation during the same autumn.
Today, he says he has a new attitude towards death.
– I’m not afraid of dying anymore. I felt like I was turning in some gate. I didn’t go towards the light, I turned and went the other way.
