There is no doubt in my mind, Patrick Roy is living his last moments in the QMJHL before making the jump to the National League.
And he won’t come back to the NHL with just any team, but with the Rangers, in my opinion.
For now, the former goaltender is concentrating on his Remparts, which face the Mooseheads in the QMJHL final. Without wanting to take anything away from Halifax, Roy’s troop should win and participate in the Memorial Cup.
If the stars align, we could be entitled, at the national tournament, to a confrontation between Roy and Dale Hunter, who manages the London Knights. These are from the Ontario final.
Imagine a Memorial Cup with Roy and Hunter… Two former NHL opponents, but also two former teammates with the Avalanche. It would be very interesting to follow.
The fit parfait
I am convinced that Patrick will have another chance in the NHL after coaching in Colorado. What makes me say that is that Patrick doesn’t talk about it – but he doesn’t say he’s not interested – and the teams that are looking for an instructor don’t say anything either. I am convinced that we will contact him after the Remparts season, unless it has already been done.
New York is the fit perfect for Roy. It’s larger than life, it’s glamorous and there’s excitement. Every gamer dreams of playing in Manhattan. They’re treated like royalty, but there’s not that much pressure. They have peace, they can walk down Broadway, and they will be recognized by maybe two out of a million people!
Patrick Roy is a star and the stars are in New York! He’ll be all over the headlines, his picture will probably be in Times Square. What more could you ask for?
In addition, Rangers general manager Chris Drury is also a former teammate of Roy with the Avalanche. And the big boss, James L. Dolan, loves stars.
A regret from Guy Lafleur
Guy Lafleur had already told me that he regretted having retired for the first time. He would have liked to play with the Rangers long before, he felt so good there.
In short, it cannot be that the position of head coach becomes available in New York and that Patrick Roy is not considered. There is no one more popular and good than him. Rangers can’t hire a rookie.
What a difficult decision for the CH
I wouldn’t want to be in the shoes of Kent Hughes and company. They will have to decide if they take the risk of drafting Russian striker Matvei Michkov in fifth place. It is expected that Connor Bedard, Adam Fantilli, Leo Carlsson and Will Smith will already be gone when the Canadiens have the right to speak.
At 17 and 18, Michkov distinguished himself with men in the KHL. Normally, no one would ask questions and we would select him. But there is the war and the mysterious death of his father. He also has a contract in hand that would not allow him to come to America for three years.
But does the Canadian need him next season? Can the CH afford to let it go, so that it comes back to haunt it? Russians like Artemi Panarin and Kirill Kaprizov came later to the NHL and quickly made their mark.
Montreal can’t be wrong. I haven’t seen Michkov play, but if he’s the best player available, Hughes has to pick him. We don’t want to relive comparisons like with Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Brady Tkachuk.

Echoes of Bergie
A game suspension? It’s a joke!
There is certainly a budding rivalry between the Oilers and the Golden Knights, but there are gestures that cross the line. Vegas star defenseman Alex Pietrangelo delivered a heavy batting to Leon Draisaitl. He only received a one-game suspension. It’s appalling. He has to thank heaven he didn’t break the playoff leading scorer’s arm. As for Darnell Nurse, the Edmonton guard was also penalized for one game for instigating a fight in the last five minutes of a game. Here, it is not a question of judgment, but an application of the rules.
Underrated Hurricanes
Carolina managed to eliminate the young New Jersey Devils in five games. Looks like fans don’t want to see them in the Eastern Finals. They are often underestimated. Still, the Canes are led by a great coach in Rob Brind’Amour, they have a nice mix of youth and experience, they are fast and score goals, and they win without key players. The Hurricanes are now waiting to find out who their next opponents will be between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Panthers. If the Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, John Tavares and William Nylander show any pride, this streak could grow longer (Florida was leading 3-1 going into Friday night’s game). Of the lot, only Nylander looks good.
The end of the fairy tale for the Kraken?
The Stars did not seem impressed by the great story of the Kraken, which surprises in only its second season in the NHL. Dallas took a 3-2 lead and they shouldn’t look back. The Stars are like the Hurricanes: for all their talent, they’re underrated. Goalkeeper Jake Oettinger is solid, consistent and stable. Coach Peter DeBoer has already led two of his clubs to the Stanley Cup Finals. Veterans Joe Pavelski, Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin are admirably supported by Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz. And what about Max Domi who lives again in series!
