Patrick Roest has qualified as the fastest Dutchman in the 1,500 meters for the first four World Cup races of the season.

Roest, who was also the strongest in the 5,000 meters on Friday, rode to 1.44.04 at the World Cup qualifying tournament in Heerenveen. This made him 0.24 seconds faster than Olympic champion Kjeld Nuis.

Wesly Dijs (1.44.58), Thomas Krol (1.44.77) and Louis Hollaar (1.45.02) also qualified for the World Cups in Obihiro, Beijing, Stavanger and Tomaszów.

The World Cup qualifying tournament can be followed this weekend on NOS.

The mass start (m) will also be held later this afternoon. Watch live via this stream or on NPO 1.

Joep Wennemars narrowly missed out on a starting ticket for the World Cups. With 1.45.17 he drove almost a second off his personal record, but it was just not enough for a place in the top five.

Now not fit

Nuis did not appear completely fit at the start in Thialf. In the run-up to the tournament, the two-time Olympic champion in the 1,500 meters suffered from the flu. That’s why he skipped the 500 meters yesterday, but he still wanted to try to qualify for the World Cups in the 1,500 meters.

That worked, because Nuis rode to the second fastest time in the final stage. Team Reggeborgh thus became the big winner of the 1,500 meters: the team qualified for the World Cups with four riders, because Roest, Dijs and Hollaar also ride for Gerard van Velde’s team.

Watch the reactions of Nuis, Roest and Krol:

“I’m quite proud of myself,” Nuis responded. “It certainly didn’t come easy, but I’m proud that I beat the flu.”

This is how the World Cup qualifying tournament works

This weekend, the World Cup Qualifying Tournament (WCKT) in Thialf will see the competition for starting tickets for the first four World Cup competitions of the skating season.

The five fastest skaters at all individual distances qualify for the World Cups. In special cases, the KNSB skating association can appoint a skater. The selection for the mass start and the team pursuit is made by national coach Rintje Ritsma.

The first World Cup will be held from November 10 to 12 in Obihiro, Japan. This will be followed by the World Cups in China (Beijing, November 17-19), Norway (Stavanger, December 1-3) and Poland (Tomaszów, December 8-10).

In any case, the Dutch 1,500-meter skaters can count on stiff competition from the American Jordan Stolz at the World Cups.

Earlier today, the 19-year-old reigning world champion in the 500, 1,000 and 1,500 meters improved his own lowland world record in the 1,500 meters to 1.42.31 at the American distance championships.
