Patrick Mouratoglouone of the most famous TennisTrainerhas an interesting parallel between the tennis legends Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic and football icons Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Talent and work ethic: A comparison across sports

Mouratoglou sees Federer’s playing style as similar to Messi’s “pure, crazy talent” while comparing Djokovic to Ronaldo due to his work ethic and attention to detail.

Djokovic and Federer, whose rivalry is one of the best in tennis, faced each other a total of 50 times between 2006 and 2020, with Djokovic easily retaining the upper hand with 27 wins against 23 losses.

Records and retirement

Djokovic, who has won 24 Grand Slam titles, leads the record list, while Federer, who retired in 2022, is third on the men’s all-time list with 20 major titles.

While tennis fans debate who is the greatest among Djokovic, Federer and Rafael Nadal in the Big 3 era, a similar debate is taking place in football. Ronaldo and Messi, widely regarded as two of the greatest footballers of all time, have divided fans as they have been the sport’s leading stars for the majority of the last 15 years.

Mouratoglou’s assessment of the tennis legends

In a video on his Instagram account, Mouratoglou said: “I was talking to a friend yesterday and we came up with the idea that Federer is Messi and Djokovic is Ronaldo.

Why? Because Federer is pure, crazy talent and he just has to feel what he’s doing. While Djokovic is the super hard-working player who pays attention to every single detail.” After Djokovic’s remarkable 2023 season, Mouratoglou praised the 36-year-old’s longevity and argued that he had cemented his status as the greatest player of all time.

“I’ve never seen anyone in the history of tennis who is at the top of his game at the age of 36 as he was at 26, 28. It’s a whole career at the top,” said the 53-year-old Frenchman in an interview with tennis majors.

“He had a difficult year or two, but for most of his career he was at the top of his game, despite playing in the same era as Roger and Rafa, which says even more about his incredible, dominant style of play.” Mouratoglou’s words reflect recognition of the extraordinary careers of these sporting legends, which inspire and admire beyond their respective sports.
