“My main mission is to open up the field of possibilities. Find solutions that motivate young people, match them and allow them to succeed. “ Patricia Robert has been accompanying young people on their journey for twenty-five years. She started her activity in the region of Vire (Calvados), after obtaining a literary baccalaureate (specialization in Latin), then above all a master’s degree in “Psychologist guidance counselor” in Paris.
The profession changed its name in 2017, bringing together, under the term of “National education psychologist”
, the elders « COP » (psychologist guidance counselors), who work in middle and high school and school psychologists, attached to primary schools. A national education official, the guidance counselor psychologist is assigned to an Information and Guidance Center (CIO) and to establishments in the sector.
“On average, an advisor works in three establishments and ensures a permanent presence at the IOC one day a week”, Patricia completes. Her case is a bit special, since in addition to being assigned to a high school, she is now seconded part-time to the University of Caen, to the orientation and integration space. His career has therefore led him to work with students from the 6e at the master.
A lot of technicality
“Throughout their career, my role is to help young people to project themselves into the future , explains Patricia. J I can intervene in the class to inform, participate in the evaluation of a student on cognitive difficulties or adaptation to the school system, carry out guidance assistance actions in the form of workshops, and receive young people individually, sometimes with their parents, to define a training project. “
In a generation, life in institutions has evolved and considerably modified the work of the psychologist. Hitherto rare, certain situations have become common: inclusion of pupils with disabilities (which requires adapted support), end of repetition (with the consequence of pupils arriving younger in 3e, at the time of the choice of orientation), massification of entry into second (with more fragile achievements and a greater risk of dropping out of school) …
In the midst of it all, it takes a lot of psychology to reconcile “The young person’s wish, parental demand and that of the institution”. Find ” the “ This solution also supposes having a perfect knowledge of the education system and the labor market, in a world which is changing very quickly and following successive reforms. “You have to be informed, read a lot, be curious, self-taught and organized , Patricia warns. Above all, you have to love helping people! “
