Mont-Joli, Quebec – From April 22 to May 2, the La Crue des Mots literary festival promises a rich tapestry of events, showcasing a captivating lineup of guests and nearly 250 activities spread across the region. This year’s festival features two prominent guests of honor: acclaimed singer-songwriter Patrice Michaud and author and artist Marie-Denise Douyon. Michaud, a multiple award-winning musician known also for his children’s album, The matches soup, will perform a concert with the guitar students of the Mistral school in Mont-Joli on April 23. Douyon, a Haitian-born author who has called Quebec home for the past thirty years, brings a compelling personal narrative to the festival. The festival organizers describe her path to writing in a press release: The trigger at the origin of the writing for Marie-Denise Douyon was a painful incident at the end of her twenty. Thru an arbitrary arrest in Haiti, inhuman and violence conditions of incarceration, she discovers that creation, writing and painting are her outlet. During her imprisonment, mostly illiterate prisoners, she is assigned the role of script and written to strangers of letters and love missives.
Now, she uses writing as a reconstruction lever
and a means of escape.
Organized by Clac (crossroads of arts and culture literature), the festival will feature a pre-opening event on April 5 at Château Landry de Mont-Joli, showcasing stories, poetry, and songs by Michel faubert and Elise Argouarc’h, offering a preview of the festival’s rich program. With around 20 writers and artists participating, the complete program, detailing the many activities planned throughout the region, will be released on March 10.
