Patrice Bergeron equaled the record of former teammate and Slovak defenseman Zden Chára when he started the fourteenth game number 7 in the playoffs of the NHL on Monday night. For the thirty-seven-year-old center, who took over the captaincy from Chara in Boston, it could also be the last duel in his career.
Boston won the President’s Trophy and broke records with 65 wins and 135 points in the regular season, but did not extend its great year in the playoffs. In the opening round, he surprisingly lost to Florida, which he lost to in the seventh meeting 3:4 after overtime and in the entire series 3:4 for matches.
For Bergeron, it was already the fourteenth such duel for everything, with Char they have the same balance of six wins and eight losses. Third in the historical order is the former defender of Washington, St. Louis and New Jersey’s Scott Stevens, who has won seven and lost six of No. 7’s 13 games.

Bergeron did not reveal what his future would be and whether he would play another season immediately after the bitter exit. After this, his contract expired and if he doesn’t agree on a new one with Boston, where he spent his entire career in the NHL, he can also try the free market. However, the end of a successful career is more likely.
“It hurts right now. I’ll take some time to think, talk to my family and then make a decision. It’s hard to process anything right now. We’re shocked and disappointed, that’s all.” said Bergeron, who tearfully hugged each of his teammates after the game. The longest hug belonged to Brad Marchand, with whom he spent more than a decade by his side. “Yeah, it was emotional. You don’t know what the future holds for him. It’s tough. We were hoping to have a long, good run together in the playoffs.” Marchand told nhl.com.
Bergeron revealed after the series that he had a displaced intervertebral disc. Due to injury, he played only the last three games in the playoffs. “Now it’s hard to say what will happen,” answered a question about health. “After a streak like that, it’s disappointing when you miss four games. I was in a hurry to get back. I have a misplaced plate, but in the playoffs, everyone struggles with multiple things.” he stated that he should not go for surgery.
He will be an unrestricted free agent after the season. Last August, he signed a one-year contract worth $2.5 million with the same amount for performance bonuses with Boston. He was selected by the Bruins with the 45th pick in the 2003 draft and played all 19 seasons in the pro league with them. In the regular season, he started 1294 duels and collected 1040 points (427+613), in the playoffs he added 170 starts and 128 points (50+78).
In the 2010/11 season, he won the Stanley Cup when he scored the winning goal, and in the same year he also entered the Triple Gold Club. He was declared the best defensive forward of the NHL five times (Frank J. Selke Trophy), which is a league record. He is the favorite to win the trophy this year as well.
In addition to Bergeron, the future of David Krejčí, who returned to Boston last year and also signed only a one-year contract, is questionable. The 37-year-old Czech center spent 16 seasons in the “Bears” jersey.
“I hope Bergeron doesn’t end, but the decision is up to him. But no matter what he decides, our bond will last a lifetime.” Marchand added.
