Patients with kidney disease can’t eat tempeh? – ANTARA News Central Kalimantan

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Among the various opinions in the community regarding foods that should not be consumed by patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) because it can worsen their disease, namely tempeh. Is this opinion true?

Clinical nutrition specialist at the University of Indonesia Hospital (RSUI), dr. Anna Maurina Singal, M.Gizi, Sp.GK(K) denied it. According to him, soybeans as raw material for tempeh contain isoflavones which can help slow down the progression of kidney failure.

“Soybeans are often considered to be one of the food ingredients that are not good for the kidneys. In fact, soybeans contain isoflavones which can actually help slow down the progression of chronic kidney failure,” he said through a press release at the RSUI, quoted on Friday.

According to Anna, soy can also help maintain nutritional status in patients on dialysis. He did not prohibit the consumption of soy, but patients should pay attention to the amount of intake.

In addition to tempeh, green vegetables which partially contain potassium are also often considered to worsen the condition of kidney problems. Anna gives tips for safe vegetable processing, including: peeling and putting it in cold water so it doesn’t darken, slicing it about 1/8 inch thick.

After that, rinse the vegetables with warm water for a few seconds, soak for at least two hours in warm water.

“Use ten times the amount of water for the amount of vegetables. If soaking is longer, change the water every four hours,” he said.

Next, rinse the vegetables in warm water again for a few seconds and cook the vegetables in five times the amount of water.

“Restrictions on fruit and vegetable intake are very individual in each patient, so it is important to adjust them to blood potassium levels,” said Anna.

Anna reminded, the kidney function to remove waste substances in the body such as urea and ammonia. If the kidneys have problems, eventually these wastes will be retained and result in metabolic disorders.

In those who have had kidney failure, they are at high risk for protein energy wasting (PEW) malnutrition. This malnutrition can lead to an increase in the progressive degree of chronic kidney failure. Therefore, diet management for patients with chronic renal failure is very important.

Anna then mentioned several things that are important to note for patients with chronic kidney failure, namely monitoring and knowing the current condition of kidney function and related metabolism, meeting calorie needs according to current conditions, meeting protein, fat, carbohydrate, vitamin, mineral needs according to current and active conditions. in doing physical activity.

“Each patient has their own kidney function, so it’s important to have regular lab checks. In addition, don’t hesitate to consult a nutritionist or dietitian regarding proper dietary arrangements for patients with chronic kidney disease,” he said.
