Patients should not self-medicate on suspicion of Covid-19

There is still no drug that can cure or prevent coronavirus, according to the World Health Organization.

Doctors have warned through social networks the risks that self-medication can have, both in patients who are healthy, and in patients who suspect they have Covid-19.

Those who have the possibilities have practically turned their houses into pharmacies. Vitamins B, C and D, anti-flu, anti-allergy, paracetamol and even antibiotics are part of the shopping lists of some for emergencies.

However, the problem begins when medical treatment is started without the supervision of a specialist who can prescribe specific medications to treat the disease.

Indications

Through his Twitter account, Dr. Marcos Lima (@marcoslimamd) has responded to the doubts of some patients regarding the coronavirus.

Lima clarified that, for example, “azithromycin does nothing to the virus,” because it is used to treat over-aggregated infections, while mild Covid-19 cases “progress without superinfection.”

He also indicated that in cases of Covid-19 without pneumonia or other complications, it is recommended “rest, isolation, acetaminophen or ibuprofen, vitamin D, vitamin C, cetirizine, bromexine (if there is a cough) and some statin.” However, the person must attend a consultation with a specialist.

The WHO

For its part, the World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized that so far there is no drug that can cure or prevent Covid-19.

It has also stated that “the misuse of hydroxychloroquine can cause serious side effects and health problems and even cause death.”

Dangers

Through WhatsApp, Dr. Carlos Guaimare, an internist and intensivist, has warned about the dangers of self-medication. This is due to the chains that circulate in the same way with lists of drugs to treat Covid-19 made by “possible doctors.”

«I have seen patients in my office with liver tests altered by the use of Atamel indiscriminately and patients with high blood sugar from the use of dexamethasone at high doses for pologand times. And also to patients with mild pneumonia that, with the use of unapproved treatments, turn into severe cases, “the doctor said.
