Pathogens: Switzerland provides Spiez Laboratory | Switzerland

SWITZERLAND [NEWS SERVICE] ⋅ Switzerland has signed a framework agreement with the World Health Organization (WHO). In the biological safety laboratory in Spiez, coronaviruses and other pathogens will in future be stored for the WHO.

Federal Councilor Alain Berset signed a cooperation agreement on cooperation within the framework of the WHO BioHub initiative on the sidelines of the WHO conference, which began on Whit Monday. The Department of the Interior announced on Monday. With this agreement, Switzerland is making the Spiez biological safety laboratory of the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) available to the WHO as a repository for SARS-CoV-2 viruses or other pathogens with epidemic or pandemic potential.

Switzerland is thus supporting the establishment of an international system for the voluntary exchange of novel pathogens. Meanwhile, the Spiez security laboratory emphasized on Twitter that the timely and transparent exchange of data is of great importance during a pandemic. They are proud to support the BioHub initiative. (help)
