PATH Station Named in Hoboken – NBC New York (47)

NEW JERSEY – The Hoboken PATH station will close for 25 days early next year for track and station work, forcing commuters to make alternative plans to travel to New York City, the Port Authority announced Thursday.

The full station closure is scheduled to begin at 11:59pm on Thursday, January 30 until 5am on Tuesday, February 25.

The Port Authority said that the closure is necessary to carry out work on the two tunnels leading to the station and that it is better than the alternative of reducing weekend service for a whole year. The Port Authority also plans to make improvements to the station and the station’s tracks.

To help ease travel issues during construction, PATH will be offering free bus service from Hoboken to Newport Station and Exchange Place. NJ Transit also plans to increase the frequency of the #126 line, which runs from Hoboken Station to the Midtown Bus Terminal. During the closure, more PATH trains will run between the Newport and Exchange Place stations on the New Jersey side and the 33rd Street and World Trade Center stops on the Manhattan side.

NJ Transit also plans to add additional Hudson-Bergen light rail service on weekdays during rush hours.

Ferry service will be maintained and expanded from Hoboken Ferry Terminals, PATH/NJ Transit Station Terminal and 14th Street Terminal will be expanded from Midtown/West 39th Street Terminal. Ferry service also operates until 10pm on weekdays and until 12am on weekends at the Hoboken destinations.

“We recognize that the complete closure of the station is a cause for concern, but it will allow us to speed up extensive repairs within the station and the vital infrastructure around it which would have taken years of immediate closure if we did it gradually,” he said. Port Authority CEO Rick Cotton said in a statement. “We are committed to full transparency throughout this process and to providing multiple travel options during the closure. “

The Port Authority plans to hold several meetings to provide more information about the closures. The currently scheduled sessions are:

  • Tuesday, November 12 at 5:30 PM: Hoboken Terminal, Waiting Room, 1 Hudson Place, Hoboken, NJ
  • Wednesday, November 13 at 5:30 PM: 2 Montgomery Street, Jersey City, NJ
  • Tuesday, December 10 at 6 pm: Virtual

Passengers traveling from the Hoboken PATH station can usually travel via Newport and Exchange Place to the World Trade Center or via Christopher Street to Manhattan.

More information about the closure is available on the PATH website here.
