Pastry Girls Bid Farewell to Graz: An End to a Sweet Chapter

The lights go out at the end of October in the small bakery on Grabenstraße in Geidorf, where Elisabeth Genser-Köhl, who was born in Kraubather, and Vera Straschek from Graz conjured up cakes and cake pops in all shapes and colours. The two master confectioners announced this on Saturday on their Instagram channel. For eleven years, the duo had been baking together for the people of Graz and far beyond, now it’s time to end the chapter.

“We’ve been toying with the idea for a long time,” says Genser-Köhl. “When we started we were both students, now we’ve grown up and are moms, priorities have shifted.” Straschek is expecting her second child in October, says Genser-Köhl, reconciling independence with small children is a challenge. “Running our own business is time-consuming and we are ultimately responsible for our employees. When circumstances just don’t fit 100% anymore, it’s better to stop remembering a great time.”

Awarded and valued

“We discovered what we had in common at friends’ party,” Genser-Köhl told the Kleine Zeitung in an interview in 2017. The beginning of a success story: the journey of the pastry girls began with a small pop-up bakery, and their creativity and innovation brought it about both women received the “Top of Styria” award and twice the “Austrian Wedding Award”. In 2016 they opened their bakery in Graz. “You don’t expect that when you turn your hobby into a job,” smiles Genser-Köhl, who has already received a lot of sad news about the end of the pastry girls. “You get really sad for a moment because you realize how great the appreciation is, but the decision is the right one for us.”

How it goes on? “Some people have asked me that,” laughs the master confectioner. “To be honest, I don’t know yet, but that’s what’s exciting about it. I know something will happen and we didn’t take this step naively. It was just important for us to say: We have this project together started and we’ll finish it together, just as we envision it.” The confectioner spent Saturday morning delivering wedding cakes, as so often in the past eleven years. “Some weddings are still coming up, after that I’ll take a break,” says Genser Köhl.
