Pasta, chicken, bronze medal… and finally pizza! Musetti’s recipe for Olympic success

Bronze medallist Lorenzo Musetti revealed he ate the same food for three months before winning the bronze medal at the Olympics. The world number 16 gave Italy its first tennis medal in 100 years after beating Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime in the third-place match.

Since the start of the grass court season, Musetti has won 15 games and lost just four, reaching at least the semifinals in the last five tournaments he has played in, including the Olympic Games and Wimbledon.

Lorenzo Musetti has taken a step forward on the tour in recent months. Although he has been in the top 30 for the past two years, more was expected from the talented player who is one of the key figures in the current success of Italian tennis.

Although he was not initially among the medal favourites, Musetti improved as the tournament progressed. He lost to Novak Djokovic in the semifinals but managed to beat Auger-Aliassime to win the first Italian tennis medal in 100 years (a day later, Paolini and Errani won the second medal in doubles).

The 22-year-old was looking forward to bringing a medal to his family and returning to Italy to see them. When asked what he would do first to celebrate the bronze medal, Musettires replied: “Eat a pizza tonight. I can’t eat just pasta and chicken again. I haven’t eaten anything else for three months. I deserve a pizza.”

“But the first thing I’ll do when I get back home is to share this moment with my family,” added the world number 16. “I’m looking forward to staying with my girlfriend and son for a few days before heading to Cincinnati.”

“Maybe it’s a little obvious, but I want to dedicate this to my family,” Musetti added. “The fact that one day I will be able to tell this story to my son is very emotional. This victory is for them and for my team that supports me and loves me. And also for all the Italian fans.”
