“We have to realize that this is a phenomenal tragedy, and a tragedy that we thought would go down in history forever.” This is what former Foreign Minister Solomon Passy said about what is happening in Ukraine.
According to him, this tragedy provides an answer to two questions we have been asking for a long time. “One is the one we’ve been asking ourselves for 30 years – ‘What exactly do we need to join NATO for?’ “Many only saw the day before yesterday why we had to join NATO,” he explained.
“The second question we have been asking ourselves for almost 140 years or more is how far unbridled Russophilia can lead. Putin entered Ukraine because he has a fifth column there. It is her he says he will release. He will not enter Luxembourg – there is no Russian-speaking population. But there are some in Bulgaria and I want to learn the lessons for us, “said the former foreign minister.
According to him, Putin’s lies in his current campaign are evidenced by a telling diplomatic fact: “If he was worried about the situation in Ukraine, the situation of Russian-speakers, the Russian population or the minority, if he was worried about the Nazis, who said he would denazify, he had to go to the Security Council several times and propose a resolution to say he was worried, ”he said.
Passy commented on the behavior of Western leaders in the last three days: We can not talk about their behavior in recent days, but for the last 30 years. The first and main mistake that was made was that Ukraine and Georgia were not admitted to NATO when the time was right. “Now it may be too late for Ukraine, but it can be given a new EU status as a negotiating country, and Georgia must be admitted to NATO at this very moment,” he said.
“The situation is very, very serious and if we do not take this situation into our own hands, I fear that another aggression by Russian President Putin, if he is alive and well, will be addressed to Bulgaria,” Passy warned.
He explained that the first thing NATO needs to do is dramatically increase its armaments in the Black Sea, including in Bulgaria. “American soldiers should be invited to Bulgaria as well, because if there is a soldier whom Putin does not want to shoot at all, it is the American soldier. “The American soldier is like a NATO shield, because Putin – the last thing he wants is to deal with the Americans.”
