Passy: If we were not allies, the United States would impose sanctions on the whole country

Solomon Passy

Sanctions under the Magnitsky law are a terrible slap in the face for our country. Let’s not wonder then why our children are leaving Bulgaria. They are ashamed to live in this country.

Thus, the chairman of the Atlantic Club and former Foreign Minister Solomon Passy commented on the US decision under the Magnitsky Act against 6 Bulgarians accused of corruption and economic measures against them. He reiterated on bTV that the decisions against Bulgaria are the largest action of the law so far.

However, we should be grateful that the United States did not sanction the whole country, but only specific Bulgarians. “It’s a gift to us just because we’re allies,” Passy said.

He recalled that before the sanctions were announced, the US Embassy in Bulgaria had warned several times that the problem of corruption in Bulgaria was serious and measures would be taken.

Shortly after the indictment against Judge Andon Mitalov two years ago, US Ambassador to Bulgaria Hero Mustafa told the Atlantic Club: We will address the problem of corruption in Bulgaria. This is the first step, but it is not the last, people need to be calm. I believe in this wonderful country and its future.

A warning about expected sanctions also came from the permanent legal adviser at the US Embassy Jessica Kim.

Vasil Bozhkov, Delyan Peevski, Ilko Zhelyazkov, Alexander Manolev, Petar Haralampiev and Krassimir Tomov are on the “black list” a few days ago.

More on the topic by Ambassador Hero Mustafa and by the Minister of Finance Asen Vassilev.
