Passing WhatsApp data on to Facebook: German supervisory authority reacts

WhatsApp has been trying for a long time to introduce a new data protection guideline that would give the company more freedom when it comes to passing on data to the parent company Facebook. Originally, the change should be made at the beginning of the year. But WhatsApp had to postpone the whole thing, the company invoking “misinformation”.

When the whole thing became known, a real shit storm broke out. At that time WhatsApp tried to explain the process. The Facebook subsidiary stated that the new privacy policy affects companies. This means that communication between private users remains unaffected. Instead, WhatsApp wants to activate new features that allow people to start chats with companies. As a result, the new privacy policy is only weakened in a way that would affect companies using the WhatsApp platform.

WhatsApp data transfer: Facebook should take a stand

It seems that WhatsApp wants to enable customer support and other business experiences to take place via Messenger – perhaps similar to Apple Business Chat. However, various privacy-conscious groups remain skeptical. Now a German regulatory authority is trying to temporarily block the start of these changes. The aim is to complete an investigation. The commission stated (via Bloomberg), she wants to ensure that there is no “misuse of data power”. Facebook will be given the opportunity to respond in a hearing. How the whole thing will end remains open for the time being. After all, it is not the first time that Facebook and WhatsApp have drawn the ire of regulators by sharing data. So the whole thing will certainly remain exciting. (Photo by Natee Meepian / Bigstockphoto)

Update vom 13. April:

A company spokesman said in a statement that Facebook is reviewing the information it has received from the Hamburg regulator and will “address their misunderstandings about the purpose and implications of the update.” The company added that it “remains committed to provide secure and private communication for everyone ”.

Our latest update includes new options people will have to message a company on WhatsApp and provide more visibility into how we collect and use data. To be clear, by accepting the updated WhatsApp Terms of Use, users are not consenting to any increase in our ability to share data with Facebook, and the update will not affect the privacy of their messages to friends or family, wherever they are are in the world. Facebook is reviewing the correspondence it has received from the Hamburg data protection authority and will clarify their misunderstandings regarding the purpose and effects of the update. We remain fully committed to the goal of enabling secure and private communication for everyone.
