Jakarta –
How frustrated are the passengers who fly but their luggage doesn’t come with them. The effects of the heat wave forced airlines to cut their loads and fuel to maintain stable aircraft performance.
That’s how the passengers of the Athens-Singapore flight Scoot feel. Usually planes on this route fly non-stop, now they have to refuel in Amritsar, India because the planes fly on low fuel.
When asked, the airline linked his case to disruption of the extreme weather conditions that have hit the Greek capital, where temperatures have exceeded 40 degrees Celsius. It is more difficult for airplanes to take off in very hot temperatures because higher temperatures reduce the performance of aircraft engines and their ability to generate the lift needed to take off.
Reported from Straits Times, Monday (31/7/2023) a Scoot spokesperson said baggage in baggage on certain flights from Athens to Singapore was left behind due to operational considerations. He said Scoot had reached out to affected customers to arrange delivery of their baggage to their homes or hotels.
The airline did not however specify how many flights from Athens had been affected by the ongoing heatwave, and whether onward flights would be affected. He only said he would continue to monitor weather conditions in Greece and adjust operations as needed.
“Scoot sincerely apologizes for the inconvenience caused. The safety of our customers and crew is our top priority, and we will continue to provide our customers with the assistance they need,” an airline spokesperson added.
Frustrated passengers
One Twitter user, saying he flew in from Athens on Saturday, complained that his flight was delayed by two hours and passengers were not notified that their checked baggage had been removed from the plane before takeoff.
In a tweet four days later, the user said there was still no update on where his luggage was.
Another Scoot passenger, who flew from Athens to Singapore on July 20, told me that he also did not know that his hand luggage was taken from the plane before departure.
The Australian national in her early 50s, who declined to be named, returned to Singapore with her husband and daughter after a holiday in Greece. The plane was delayed for almost two hours. Three out of four of her family’s checked baggage did not arrive in Singapore with them, and there were other people on the same flight who faced the same problem.
Meanwhile he was told that his bag would be on the next flight to Singapore arriving the next morning. Finally he was reunited with his luggage only on Monday, four days later.
