Passenger Ferry “Marco Polo” Successfully Towed to Port After Grounding Incident

A week and a half after the passenger ferry ran aground, the ship was towed into port on Thursday morning, according to the TT news agency and the radio station SVT. Everything went undramatically and according to plan, a coast guard spokesman told SVT. The ship had already been freed from the seabed on Wednesday and taken a good nautical mile out to deeper waters.

The “Marco Polo” was traveling between Trelleborg and Karlshamn on October 22nd with around 70 people on board when it touched the bottom, but continued on its journey and ran aground again about five kilometers later. Since then, the ship has been stuck near Hörvik, around 120 kilometers northeast of Malmö. The passengers and some of the crew were able to leave the ship. Spilled oil caused environmental damage. The emergency services collected around 50,000 liters of oil and oil waste. Two crew members were fined for negligence in shipping.
