Video Pascal Eenkhoorn was again on the podium of the Volta NXT Classic today – just like last year – but again not on the highest stage. The Dutchman from Lotto Dstny had to recognize his superior in a sprint-à-deux in the Belgian Timo Kielich.
After the finish, the number two looked back on his race and the battle with Kielich in a flash interview. “He really is the deserved winner. I gave it my all, but it wasn’t enough. Alpecin-Deceuninck was very strong along the way with three riders in the final. That’s just part of the course.”
Eenkhoorn was on the road in the last kilometers with Kielich, who was faster on paper, so he had to do something different. “I know he is fast and so I decided not to take over the last kilometers to save energy. But yes… I tried to be the first through the last corner, but he was just too fast in the sprint.”
In other words, the former Dutch champion is not looking for excuses. “Of course it’s a shame when you’re so close, but I tried everything. I also rode solo for a while, but I couldn’t do it anymore. Then it stops.”
