The European aid fund is intended to help cushion the negative economic and social consequences of Brexit in the Member States and sectors that have been hardest hit. “I am delighted with this new task, which is very important, especially for Belgium. Belgium will receive a total of 324 million euros from the Brexit fund. This is the fifth largest amount earmarked for an EU member state. In fact, Belgium will be the third largest recipient of these EU funds when measured against the size of the economy. We will work to ensure that these amounts arrive quickly where they are needed ”, explains Arimont about the background to his appointment.
The Brexit Relief Fund offers support for companies and jobs in sectors and regions particularly affected by Brexit. Administrations are also to be supported in properly carrying out border, customs, health and plant protection controls due to Brexit and in providing services for affected citizens and companies. “As Parliament’s negotiator, it will be important to me that the aid reaches the companies and people most affected by the new trade barriers as a result of the new trade barriers, quickly and easily,” said Arimont. Small and medium-sized companies in particular, which cannot simply adapt their trade relationships like the big corporate giants, need quick and good help.
The Belgian economy is and is particularly closely linked to its neighbor Great Britain. Although the Brexit agreement will not result in any new tariffs or quantity restrictions, so-called non-tariff trade barriers will arise, which have not existed for decades. (red / um)
