Pasalimani: “The house was unsuitable” – Testimony of a former tenant – 2024-04-19 20:53:01

The young policeman, who worked part-time in a construction site to supplement his income, was crushed by rubble and breathed his last on Neorion Street in Piraeus, when the property collapsed before anyone could help him.

The tragic news has plunged the parents and friends in Grevena, where the deceased policeman came from, into mourning, as well as his colleagues, who speak of him in the best words.

Everyone is waiting for answers about the causes of the collapse of the building, which led Agathangelos Papadopoulos to his death.

The Chronicles

Everything happened on Tuesday 16/04 in the morning during work on a neoclassical building, on Neorion street which ends in Pasalimani, Piraeus. In the attempt to put down a wall, the workers seem to have hit a beam and the upper floor immediately collapsed.

The unlucky policeman, who was with 5 other people inside the building, jumped onto the truck below to save himself but did not make it. He was crushed by rubble and died on the spot.

EKAV rescuers, firefighters and policemen rushed to the scene but it was already too late for the 31-year-old policeman.

Nine arrests

After the tragedy, the contractor and 8 workers were arrested, including three injured.

They are looking for the owner of the property, as well as the engineer.

The Greek former owner of the neoclassical building has been summoned to testify, while a case file has already been filed against a total of 16 people.

Former tenant: “The house was unsuitable”

Speaking to Live News, the former tenant of the house that collapsed said she was asked to leave the building “badly,” as she said.

“The house was unsuitable, I had filed a complaint with the Health Department, I also received threats from the previous owner with whom I had contact. I don’t know the new owners. The selling price of the house was 450 thousand euros, but I don’t know how much the property ended up being bought for.”

“He was always helping, he was such a kid”

The deceased special guard had been serving with the DIAS team for the past few years and was doing extra work to make ends meet.

“He didn’t stop, he always helped, he was that kind of kid,” said the dead policeman’s uncle.

He had previously worked as a waiter and also as a delivery boy, where he had even been injured during delivery. Lately he has been involved in construction work.

“He was the best kid, a laughing stock,” said the officer’s aunt.

The tragedy in Pasalimani revealed, in the person of the 31-year-old special guard, the difficulties faced by the police in general, in order to survive, since the low wages lead many to seek additional work in order to live with dignity.

The deceased policeman did not want to burden his parents. He was chasing jobs and trying to grab every opportunity to increase his income. Honorable and proud, until his untimely end.

“He really wanted to be a police officer, he had a passion for it,” said the police officer’s aunt.

The body of the unfortunate policeman is expected to be transferred to Grevena in the next few days for his funeral, while investigations into the tragedy continue.
