Prince Haakon was born on July 20, 1973 in Oslo as the son of King Harald on Queen Sonja. Haakon has an older sister, Princess Märtha Louise (1971). Because they were born before 1990, it is not Märtha-Louise who becomes heir to the throne as the eldest daughter, but Haakon. It was not until 1990 that the law changed and now women are also allowed to take the throne. Prince Haakon’s godparents are: his grandfather King Olav V of Norway, his aunt Princess Astrid of Norway, Prince Carl of Sweden, King Carl Gustaf from Sweden, Queen Margaretha from Denmark and princess Anne of Great Britain.
Haakon gets engaged on December 1, 2000 to Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby. On August 25, 2001 they married in the Domkirke in Oslo. The couple have two children together: Princess Ingrid Alexandra (2004) in Prince Sverre Magnus (2005). Mette-Marit has another son from a previous relationship, Marius Borg Høiby (1997).
Haakon is a real water person, we regularly see pictures of him on the surfboard. He is also involved in water management worldwide for the UN.
