Many more members than usual showed up at the Party for the Animals members’ conference. 700 were expected, but according to the party there are now about 2,200.
This has everything to do with the conflict that has taken place in the party leadership in recent weeks. The board, which has since resigned, set aside party leader Esther Ouwehand as party leader. He hired a lawyer and became party leader, after which the board resigned.
Many members came today in solidarity with Ouwehand, they told NOS. When they registered for the congress, they did not yet know that Ouwehand would become party leader after all.
Many members now feel extra involved in the party, they say:
Members of the Party for the Animals attend a conference en masse to support the party
The agenda includes various motions about the governance crisis. For example, there is a motion “Call to connect and interact respectfully with each other”, a motion “Powers of a political leader” and various motions about the direction of the party.
The members also determine the election program and the list of candidates. There may still be shifts in this regard. MP Lammert van Raan, for example, is in a probably unelectable position of 20. The members can still vote him to position 6. Second place is between MP Christine Teunissen and newcomer Ines Kostic.
A lot of press was also present at the meeting. The party has reserved a corner of the room for members who do not want to be filmed. Ouwehand is expected to give her speech around 2 p.m.
