After unprecedented heat and severe storms in parts of the tri-state area, more scattered showers are expected over the next two days before pleasant weather returns for the 4th of July celebrations.
A flash flood warning was issued for Queens County until 5 p.m. as gloomy conditions on Friday brought the threat of a downpour. Low-lying areas or other vulnerable areas could be flooded.
The threat of flash flooding has moved to New Jersey, with Bergen, Essex, and Hudson counties receiving a warning until 7 p.m. While in New York, Orange and Rockland counties are under a severe thunderstorm warning until 6 p.m. : 30 pm
Skies will be cloudy for much of Friday and occasional showers and thunderstorms are expected, while highs remain below average at 70 degrees across much of the area.
While July 4 appears to be an overall drier day, some transient showers during the afternoon cannot be ruled out. Most places seem to get rid of the rain in time for the Macy’s fireworks show on Sunday night.
Meanwhile, the record-breaking heat and humidity that dominated the weather for most of the week finally eased a bit thanks to a series of storms that triggered tornado warnings in parts of New Jersey.
While Thursday remained muggy into the mid-1980s, it was a huge relief after Wednesday’s extreme heat that sent Central Park hitting 98 degrees, its hottest day in nearly a decade. Newark set a June all-time high of 103 degrees.
Temperatures are expected to climb back to the 80s on Monday and hit 90s on Tuesday and Wednesday before the threat of more rain and storms returns next week.
