ANNOUNCEMENTS•
The sea has washed away parts of the Ameland beach. The “beach fall” has created a kind of reef on the west side of the island.
For safety reasons, the municipality has cordoned off a stretch of beach, he writes Omrop Fryslan. There is a danger that even more beach will be washed away by the sea.
The coast is slowly washing away
It has long been known that the Dutch coast is slowly crumbling, the phenomenon is known as coastal erosion. The phenomenon is particularly threatening for the Wadden Islands: the more sand that is washed off the islands, the smaller and more vulnerable they become.
That is why it was decided in 1990 to structurally maintain the Dutch coast. In 2019 Ameland was still there roundtherefore the beach was provided with a new layer of sand.
Next year, the coast of the island will be raised, according to the regional broadcaster.
