Partnership Enables Young People to Access Locally Sourced Food

Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco, has partnered with international aid organisation Rise Against Hunger to provide better nutrition for young people in Salesian schools and centres in Timor-Leste. In the second half of 2022, Rise Against Hunger provided funding so that locally sourced food could be purchased and distributed to Salesian schools and centres, allowing beneficiaries to improve their health and better engage in studies and extracurricular activities. The food support also helps to provide young people with the energy to engage with their peers. The partnership benefited organisations including the Don Bosco Halicou Orphanage in Maliana which runs a junior high school, vocational school and shelter for thousands of orphans. Salesian missionaries and Salesian sisters living in Timor-Leste also operate three orphanages for poor and homeless youth, as well as a medical clinic, all aimed at helping to rebuild the country after the devastating civil war that took place there.
