Seven warning signs that may indicate a brain hemorrhage

Experts warn that a brain hemorrhage is always an emergency that must be treated immediately. In this condition, a blood vessel within the skull either tears, bursts or is injured. This results in bleeding in the skull (intracranial bleeding). The hematoma or circulatory disorder in turn injures tissue in the brain – with potentially life-threatening consequences for the person affected. Typical symptoms usually appear suddenly, without warning and when the patient was previously completely well. The warning signs of a brain hemorrhage include the following symptoms:

  • Visual disturbances
  • Hemiplegia
  • A drooping corner of the mouth
  • Uncertainty when standing and walking
  • Emotional disorders
  • Speech disorders and slurred speech
  • unconsciousness

In addition, symptoms such as headaches, nausea or vomiting can occur. The cause of a brain hemorrhage is usually chronic high blood pressure (hypertension).

Preventing brain hemorrhage: Long-term treatment of high blood pressure

Due to its main trigger, the occurrence of a cerebral hemorrhage could be prevented by long-term treatment of high blood pressure and timely emergency reduction of a sharp rise in blood pressure. Avoiding controllable risk factors such as smoking, obesity and an unhealthy diet as well as a generally healthy lifestyle also contribute to the prevention of a cerebral hemorrhage.
