After the partial collapse of a high-rise building in the US state of Florida, the entire residential building is to be demolished. She had signed an order, said Miami-Dade district administration chief Daniella Levine Cava on Friday (local time). At the same time, she emphasized that the top priority of the authorities is still the search and rescue operation at the building in the coastal town of Surfside. After the discovery of two more bodies, the death toll rose to 22.
The seven-year-old daughter of a firefighter was one of the recently recovered fatalities, Levine Cara explained. The number of missing people fell to 126 people.
The twelve-story residential building Champlain Towers South had partially collapsed on the night of June 24th. The exact cause of the accident is unknown. However, in 2018 an expert report had already found “major structural damage” to the building, which was completed in 1981.
Levine Cava said authorities are still considering the best schedule for demolishing the apartment building. Initially, their efforts continued to focus on rescuing victims. On Thursday, the emergency services had to suspend their search due to security concerns, they could only continue their efforts in the evening. The mission is also overshadowed by Hurricane “Elsa”, which is approaching the Florida coast at the beginning of next week and is likely to impair the search operation.
US President Joe Biden visited the scene of the accident on Thursday. He spoke to emergency services, survivors and relatives of missing persons.
