Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – Before the next state party conference, a renewed candidacy in the Southwest AfD is in the offing. In addition to Martin Hess, a member of the Bundestag who is considered moderate, MP Dirk Spaniel now also wants to run for the state presidency. He announced this to the German Press Agency on Tuesday. Spaniel promises to combat membership attrition and turn the tide. “The profile of the AfD Baden-Württemberg must be adapted to the conservative, serious electorate in the middle class in Baden-Württemberg.”
Bundestag faction leader Alice Weidel took office as state leader in February 2020 in order to pacify the divided state association. But she no longer wants to run for office. Previously, Spaniel and parliamentary group leader Bernd Gögel had led the association in a dual leadership and had been at loggerheads. Animosity and intrigues made headlines.
It is currently still unclear whether the state party conference in Bad Cannstatt at the beginning of July can take place as planned. The operator of the Carl Benz Arena, where the AfD members wanted to meet, had terminated the party’s contract at short notice. The AfD had announced that it wanted to take legal action against it.
