Partido Popular (PP) Revalidates Absolute Majority in Estepona Municipal Elections

He Partido Popular (PP) has again revalidated the absolute majority in the municipal elections in the town of Estepona, collecting a total of 14,700 votes, representing 60.79% of the ballot and 17 councilors, which will allow José María García Urbano to continue governing for the next 4 years.

The town has registered a participation of 51.85%, registering a decrease of 3.47 points, and an abstention rate of 48.14%.

Specifically, 4 political formations have presented themselves to the elections after more than a decade of absolute majorities of the PP, obtaining the PP 14,700 votes (60.79%) and 17 councilors, for which it loses 4 compared to the 2019 elections; the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) with 4,753 votes (19.65%) and 5 councilors adding 1 more, while Vox has collected 3,246 votes (13.42%), gaining representation in the municipal Corporation with 3 councillors. With Andalucía Podemos-Izquierda Unida it has added 1,128 votes (4.66%), for which reason it has not reached the number of sufficient supports to have representation in the City Council, made up of 25 councilors and with an absolute majority of 13 councilors.

The mayor, José María García Urbano, declared this Sunday that “it really is a great result. The town of Estepona wants the Popular Party to continue running this city for the fourth time and we are going to do it with our project, with our commitments and as always with the same enthusiasm and with the same desire as always”, he remarked.

The councilor has highlighted that the training has obtained “above 60% of the votes. valuing that it is “a great result at the provincial and national level, so obviously we are satisfied.”

The last years have been marked by the absolute majorities of the PP since 2011, when Jose Maria Garcia Urbano took the baton of command, and has since revalidated to date, being one of the most voted for mayors in Spain in municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants. Its management has been driven by the transformation of the city, with special attention to the urban center and its pedestrianization.

One of the main objectives of the party is to make Estepona a university city, with an extensive scholarship program for those registered in the town. The project will be promoted by the Antonia Guerrero Foundation. Another of the objectives set for the new legislature is to leave the inherited debt from 304 million euros to zero, of which more than 255 million euros have already been paid.

In the 2019 elections, the popular candidate swept in Estepona and expanded its previous absolute majority. From 17 councilors he went to 21, with 16,828 votes.

The growth of the popular occurred at the expense of PSOE and United Left. The socialists lowered two ediles; going from six to four. Izquierda Unida lost its only councilor. And the high expectations around Ciudadanos and Vox were not met, since none of these formations entered the Estepona City Council in the previous elections.

sounded like number 2 on the list of Malaga capital, but in the end it did not materialize, so García Urbano announced in January that he was running for re-election. Its program includes the expansion of the boulevard with the comprehensive remodeling of Avenida San Lorenzo for its integration with Avenida de España, the development of new sports facilities in the north, the integration of the Monterroso River into the city, new parking lots, the commitment to establish a University and various projects to make Estepona a cultural reference.
