Partial collapse of a high-rise building – rescue work in Florida is hampered by fire

In Florida, the search for people buried after the partial collapse of a high-rise building is made difficult by a fire.

It was extremely difficult to locate, isolate and extinguish the source of the fire under the rubble, according to the authorities in the affected Miami-Dade district. The building with 130 residential units had partially collapsed on Thursday night. According to the rescue workers, at least four people were killed in the accident and several were injured. More than 35 people have so far been rescued from the rubble. 159 people are still missing.

Why the skyscraper partially collapsed is still unclear. The building was inspected three years ago, and the expert report mentions several deficiencies, including problems with the structure of the concrete.
