Red-hot lava erupted high in the air on Sunday night after the volcanic eruption on the island of La Palma in the Spanish Canary Islands, which began on September 19, gained momentum again, Reuters reported.

According to local media, the northern side of the volcano collapsed late Sunday, causing a faster eruption of lava. Radio Kadena Sir reported that the new lava flow threatened several nearby towns.

“In the last few minutes, there has been a clear increase in effusive activity,” the Involcan Institute of Volcanic Studies in the Canary Islands said earlier on Twitter.

The volcano made a loud rumble and lava erupted from its crater.

Earlier on Sunday, during a visit to La Palma, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez promised his government on Tuesday to approve 206m euros in emergency aid for the island.

The money will be used to restore infrastructure, water supply, the tourism sector.

The Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted on September 19 and has destroyed more than 900 buildings so far. About 6,000 of La Palma’s 83,000 residents have been evacuated.
