On November 28, 2023, the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Reinis Brusbärdis, was in Berlin on a working visit – he participated in the annual Berlin Foreign Policy Forum, and also met with the German Minister of State for European and Climate Affairs, Anna Lirmanis (Anna Lührmann) and the chancellor’s adviser on European policy issues, Undini Rugi (Undine Ruge).
During the meeting with A. Lirmani and U. Rugi, the current issues of the European Union’s agenda were discussed – preparation for the December European Council, EU enlargement perspectives, EU institutional reforms, as well as the upcoming EU multi-year budget review. The negotiating partners agreed on the perspective of Ukraine’s EU membership and the need to start accession negotiations, as well as the importance of EU assistance to Ukraine. During the meeting with the German Minister of European and Climate Affairs, a lot of attention was paid to bilateral cooperation, highlighting opportunities for cooperation in the fields of green energy, defense industry development and digitization as special perspectives.
The Berlin Foreign Policy Forum was established in 2011 by the Kerber Foundation with the aim of bringing together high-level politicians, experts and media representatives to discuss current issues of the international agenda. In addition to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas conflict, the forum paid a lot of attention to Germany’s foreign policy and security policy. In this context, an in-depth discussion on the role of Germany in the security of the Baltic region was held at the forum with the presence of representatives of politicians, ministries and think tanks from the Baltic states and Germany, as well as historians.
