Parliamentary elections should be held again in Bulgaria

Bulgaria The Socialist Party announced on Tuesday that it is unable to form a government and is handing its mandate back to the country’s president, meaning Bulgaria will hold another parliamentary election – the fifth in two years.

“We have done everything necessary to fulfill this third mandate,” said party leader Cornelia Ninova.

Despite clearly defining national priorities in negotiations with other parties, “there was a lack of will to form a working government,” she added.

It was the third and last chance for this parliament to form a government. Since these efforts to form a government have also ended without results, new parliamentary elections must be held.

Before the Socialists, two of the strongest factions in the Bulgarian parliament – the center-right party GERB and the reformist party “We continue the changes” – were already trying to form a government.

President Rumen Radev will now dissolve parliament, appoint a transitional government and call new elections, which are expected to take place in April.

Analysts predict that another election will re-elect a fragmented parliament that will struggle to negotiate a compromise and form a workable government.

The protracted political crisis will put a damper on Bulgaria’s plans to join the eurozone at the end of the year, as well as on the soon European Union receiving economic recovery funds.
