Parliament Speaker Şentop reacts to Greek Cypriot Parliament Speaker Dimitriu

Şentop reacted to the words of Southern Cyprus Greek Cypriot Administration Parliament Speaker Dimitriu towards Turkey at the EU Parliament Speakers Summit.

Stating that Dimitriu made groundless and unlawful accusations against Turkey, Şentop said that Turkey went to Cyprus to protect its compatriots from a massacre by using its rights as a guarantor country in the Zurich and London agreements that established the 1959 Republic of Cyprus.

Emphasizing that Turkey has established peace and security on the island, Şentop said, “Comparing Turkey’s intervention in Cyprus in 1974 to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a cheap distortion of the facts.” he said.

Şentop stated that the Peace Operation is in accordance with international law, as a requirement of the guarantor authority given to Turkey by the 1959 Zurich and London agreements. Şentop, Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, said:

“Today, many Greek Cypriots also express that the massacre and genocide that Turks were subjected to before 1974 was wrong. In the following process, both Turkey and Turkish Cypriots conveyed to their interlocutors that they were ready for a just solution. As a matter of fact, as seen in the referendum held under the auspices of the UN in 2004, Turkish Cypriots approved the solution, the Greek Cypriot side rejected the will for peace and coexistence of the two communities. By the way, I would like to express that the EU has not fulfilled its commitments to the Turkish Cypriots. The fact that these allegations are still being discussed here is that the EU meetings are held captive with such unrealistic approaches and the EU It is proof of my words that it hinders the development of the strategic point of view of Turkey.”
