Parliament passed the law to introduce the euro

Without discussions and debates, the National Assembly finally adopted the law on the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria, public radio reported. The texts supported by the Budget and Finance Committee were approved.

The law was supported by 167 MPs from PP-DB, GERB and DPS, 48 MPs – from “Vazrazhdane”, it was opposed by non-members of groups and two from BSP, and from “Ima Talik Narod” and one independent who to avoid

The date of introduction of the euro in our country is the date specified in the Decision of the Council of the European Union on the adoption of the euro by the Republic of Bulgaria.

A “period of dual circulation of the leva and the euro” is also included. Within a month from the date of introduction of the euro, the lev and the euro will be legal tender at the same time. After this period expires, the lev ceases to be a legal tender.

The MPs wrote that price revaluation cannot lead to placing consumers in a position of financial disadvantage and cannot increase the prices of goods and services, except when this is justified by factors objective economic.

The BNB exchanges banknotes and coins from leva to euro for free, in unlimited quantity and without time limit, at the official exchange rate. In the first six months after the introduction of the euro, banknotes and coins will be freely exchanged in euros and banks. For the same period, “Bulgarian Post” exchanges banknotes and coins in euro for free in settlements where there are no offices or branches of a credit institution. The MPs rejected a proposal by the MP from “Vazrazhdane” Dimo Drenchev, who insisted that the period during which the branches of “Bulgarian Post” would exchange levs to be a year, not 6 months free euro.

The Parliament decided to introduce the so-called period of double prices, when prices and other monetary amounts for payment will be written in BGN and EUR. After it expires, both assignments are terminated. In that period, the prices of the goods and services, the total final amount paid by the user, will be mentioned in the fiscal voucher issued or in another document documenting the payment , in euro and in BGN.

When he pays in cash in levs or in euros, the merchant will return the balance in full in euros. When there is not enough available at the moment, it will return the balance completely in BGN.
