A healthy lifestyle with regular exercise, healthy nutrition, relaxation and good sleep reduces certain symptoms of Parkinson’s. However, it is not always easy to make lasting lifestyle changes. The lifestyle choice aid must change that.
Customized support
The approach for people with Parkinson’s disease differs per person. This may involve regular exercise, healthy eating, good sleep, relaxation or whether someone wants to get involved in social activities. The decision aid provides information about what a healthy lifestyle can bring to someone and what is important. The decision aid then helps to think about what someone wants to adjust to his or her lifestyle, how someone wants to do that and whether help is needed.
Nursing consultation hours
The decision aid offers Parkinson’s care providers tools to make it easier to discuss desired improvement goals and how lifestyle change can contribute to this. In addition, the decision aid offers reliable information for professionals.
Paramedics also see that people with Parkinson’s come to them with a more targeted request for help, after going through the decision aid, which provides great added value within the treatment.
Research among 477 Parkinson’s care providers has shown that Parkinson’s nurses and nurse specialists like to include decision aid as a permanent part of the nursing consultation.
Pilot implementation
The Parkinson’s lifestyle decision aid is an initiative of ParkinsonNL and developed in collaboration with the Parkinson Association and ParkinsonNet and ZorgKeuzeLab as a development and implementation partner. A pilot implementation will soon start in a number of healthcare institutions, where the decision aid will be provided under the supervision of a Parkinson’s nurse.
