Veldhoven Library and SWOVE will organize an information evening about Parkinson’s disease on Monday, November 20. In addition to explaining the disease, SWOVE explains what it can do if someone is confronted with the disease. Admission to the evening is free after registration.

VELDHOVEN – A study by neurological researchers from a number of hospitals shows that over the past 10 years the number of patients with Parkinson’s has increased by as much as 30%. According to the Parkinson’s Association, the Netherlands now has more than 63,500 people with this disease or parkinsonism. The disease does not only affect the elderly. Of every 3 patients, 1 is younger than 65 years. There are also more and more people in their twenties and thirties who are affected by the disease.

Deceleration mode

All in all, reason enough to hold an information evening about this disease, says Patricia Kohlen, welfare advisor at SWOVE. “Registrations have already been received for the evening. Kim Rijkelijkhuizen is a Parkinson’s nurse at the Máxima MC. She will explain what Parkinson’s disease is and what parkinsonism means. Also what happens in the brain and body when you have Parkinson’s.”
Characteristic symptoms of Parkinson’s include trembling and difficulty initiating movements. “Everything goes into slowdown mode. Think of difficulty getting up from a chair. The ability to react is also affected. Parkinsonism is the form of dementia related to Parkinson’s. Not everyone who has Parkinson’s develops dementia, but many do.”

Support

Exercise becomes a challenge with Parkinson’s, Kohlen knows. “There are geriatric physiotherapists who offer specific exercise programs for this purpose. The physiotherapist can also visit the person at home. Such a physiotherapist also looks at support equipment that allows someone with Parkinson’s to continue moving, such as an exercise bike. In addition, there is the occupational therapist. He or she monitors the home to adjust things where necessary and gives tips to the person with Parkinson’s. The occupational therapist is included in the basic insurance. You can use it for free for 10 hours per year.”

Fellow organizations

The last part of the evening is about what SWOVE can mean. “I will discuss the services we can offer. As a welfare advisor, I can visit to draw attention to services such as meal provision and Samen de Dag Door. I can also refer to a fellow organization such as Zonnebloem or Cordaad Welzijn for help with maintaining the garden, for example. I will also point out activities for the informal caregiver. We look at what the person likes or needs. Then we’ll see if we can find a place for it.”

Evaluation

At the end of the evening, Monday November 20, those present can complete an evaluation form. Kohlen: “People can indicate what they would like more information about. This is useful input for us for the second evening that will take place on April 11 next year.”

“Everything goes into slowdown mode. Think of difficulty getting up from a chair. The ability to react is also affected. Parkinsonism is the form of dementia related to Parkinson’s”

To register

The evening will take place on Monday, November 20 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. You must register for it. This can be done via email to p.kohlen@swove.nl or the library website.
