Charlotte, NC.- Paid parking that is currently in effect until 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, in busy areas such as Uptown, South End, NoDa and Commonwealth Avenue at Plaza Midwood, will be extended to 10 p.m. starting Tuesday, September 3.
Under the new measure, drivers will have to pay to park between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. every day of the week except Sunday. The change will affect all metered parking lots in the city.
Officials said new parking signs will be installed throughout the city that “reflect the new operating hours of on-street metered parking“, which should be updated in Uptown and South End in early September.
STUDY
The city says the changes are part of “Recommendations for better system management“, citing the on-street parking and curb lane management study, which began in 2022.
“Evaluation of parking study data shows that a metered parking system that ends at 10 p.m. will generate parking turnover during evening peak hours, promote the use of off-street parking for long-term parking needs, and improve safety by ensuring that people comply with parking regulations.“, reads the city’s website.
FINES
Drivers who flout the new rules will receive warning tickets between Sept. 3 and Sept. 14, officials said. More serious fines will begin to be issued Sept. 16.
The city’s parking system has changed in recent years, with more on-street parking spaces being added in 2023.
Parking meters cost $1.50 per hour in Charlotte, up from $1 per hour a few years ago.
